The 4th "JULIAN ARCAS" INTERNATIONAL CLASSICAL GUITAR COMPETITION

Rules of the competition

Cajamar, organises and calls the 4th "JULIAN ARCAS" INTERNATIONAL CLASSICAL GUITAR COMPETITION to be held in Almería (Spain) from the 31st of May to the 7th of June 2003.

This Competition is open to any performer of classical guitar, and its aim is to promote the use of this instrument.

There will be three categories in the Competition: the first one, for performers until 13 years old, the second one, for performers until 18 year old, and the third one will be the absolute category. All the guitarists interested in taking part in the last one, will be able to do it with no age limit. Competitors will only be allowed to enter one of the categories. Competitors of the first and second category can have the limit age during the year 2003.

The Competition in the First Category will be called "Antonio de Torres", in the second category will be called "José Tomás", and only in the third category the competition will be called "Julián Arcas".


FIRST ROUND

On 31st and 1st June 2003, at 9:00, in the "Maestro Padilla Auditorium", a public draw will be carried out to determine the performing order of all the competitors registered in the first and the second categories, who will have to be compulsorily present at this place.

The draw for the competitors of the third category will be carried out on 2nd June 2003 at 20:45 and at the "Court of lights of the School of Arts and Offices".

According to the order established in the draw, and at the place and on the date that are stated, the contestants who have been accepted will have to play:

"Antonio de Torres" International Competition (First Category only one round):

"José Tomás" Competition (Second Category):

"Julián Arcas" Competition (Third Category):

Competitors may be interrupted at any time during their performance in any of the categories if the Jury considers it suitable.

The First Category will have one round, the Second will have two and the Third one will have three.

When every round has finished, the Jury will announce the competitors who have overcome it and who will perform in the following one.

The performing order in the following rounds will be the same as in the first one and, when this has finished, contestants will give the Organisation the scores of the pieces they want to play in the following round.


SECOND ROUND

In the Second (1st June) and the Third Categories (5th June), the contestants who have overcome the first round will play a program chosen by them with pieces of two different styles at least, with a maximum length of 15 minutes for the Second Category and of 20 minutes for the Third one. Pieces from the first round will not be allowed.

In the Third Category, after the Competition second round, the Jury will announce the contestants who will perform in the Final round on 6th June in the order previously established. When the final contestants have been named, they will have to provide the Organisation with the scores of the pieces they are going to play in the Final.


FINAL (6th June)

Contestants will play a program chosen by them with a minimum length of 20 minutes and maximum of 25 minutes.

In Third Category, all those who take part in the Final will receive 300 €, which are not cumulative to other prizes.

"Antonio de Torres" Competition (First Category):

"José Tomás" Competition (Second Category):

"Julián Arcas" Competition (Third Category):

FIRST: 5.000 €.

SECOND: 2.500 €

THIRD: 1.300 €

Prizes may be divisible, and the Jury may not award some of them.

The contestants who are awarded a prize will have to collect it personally at the place and the time which are indicated.

The winner of the first prize in the third category, yields in exclusive the necessary phonographic rights for the record edition of the recording of the CD that composes the prize.

The amounts awarded as Prizes will be deducted the withholding according to what is established by the income tax.


ORGANISING COMMITTEE

The Organising Committee of the Competition is headed by the Manager of the Institute of Studies of Cajamar Mr. Jerónimo Molina, and it is made up of representatives of the corporations and institutions previously mentioned, as well as of people with a recognised musical prestige.

The Organising Committee commits itself to accept contestants’ applications. Those contestants who do not appear at the time established by the Organisation for the Competition without a justified reason, will be excluded from this Competition, even if they had been previously included.

The Committee also commits itself to solve the questions which may arise in cases not foreseen in the interpretation of these Rules.

The Jury’s awarding will be unappealable. To award the Prizes, the Jury will evaluate the contestants’ performance and programming in all Competition rounds.

Applications will be made in writing, in person or by mail before 20th May 2003, and they will be addressed to:

In order to be registered, the use of the forms provided by the Organisation is advisable. Together with the registration form, contestants will enclose the following documents:

The Organising Committee will provide information about accommodation in hotels to those contestants who request it.


FINAL PROVISIONS

All rounds will be open to the public and may be recorded either in Video or Audio.

The "JULIAN ARCAS" INTERNATIONAL GUITAR COMPETITION reserves, during and after the Competition, the right to broadcast every performance on Radio, TV, Video or any other media, including the Final. Contestants will not receive any payments or fees from this broadcasting. The concert which is part of the First Prize in the Third Category will take place during the year after the Competition.

The Organisation will not be responsible in any case for the variations which, for reasons beyond its control, may occur.

The Organising Committee will not be liable for the compensation for possible damage caused or suffered by contestants because of the Competition. In case of doubt in the interpretation of these Rules, the Spanish version will be the valid one.

The request to be registered implies that these Rules are known and accepted.
